Website stuff [Sep. 4th, 2008|02:46 am]
[Current Mood | accomplished]

I've just given my website a facelift. Well, to be truthful, I chose the new look and then [info]nym777 did all the hard work coding almost everything. (Thank you so much, yet again, Nym!) It had been a few years and I was getting a bit tired of all the blue so... it's only blue-ish, now. *g*

Anyway, the fanfic section is now up to date, and I've also taken the opportunity to do some housekeeping and take down some of the older content.

Come and take a look at how pretty and shiny it is!

Writing [Aug. 28th, 2008|02:48 am]
It's been an interesting process over the past few days, finding my writing muscles again after more than a year since I last wrote anything longer than the very occasional ficlet. I'd forgotten so much about my own personal writing process. I've found that I'm more productive in the evening than the daytime, and that I get more written after midnight than at any other time, which is exactly the way it used to be. More than once, I've really wished desperately that I could be a linear writer and have everything come out neatly and in order, but my brain just doesn't work that way and never has.

Tonight, though, tonight I'm being forcibly reminded of one other aspect of the way I write: I can never accurately estimate how long one of my stories is going to be. I think this one is finally drawing to a close now, after a detour I didn't see coming, and I can finally get back to the section I wrote days ago, which appears to be the end.

We shall see.

*trudges back to the field of battle for the last round - probably*

SGA [Aug. 21st, 2008|02:44 pm]
[Current Mood | sad]

Oh, bloody hell. I've spent the morning in bed with a headache, cuddling the kitten. I finally get up and online, only to find that SGA has been cancelled.

Clearly, I should have stayed in bed.

Also: what a week to pick to *finally* start writing again.

*looks sadly at fic draft*

*stomps off to find painkillers, and possibly a stiff drink*

Mostly kitten picspam [Aug. 20th, 2008|08:47 pm]
It hasn't been a very good couple of weeks for me, but things have been on the upswing again the last couple of days, so it's time to wave the flag at the outside world and share a few kitten pics.

You remember these pictures of Sasha on the windowsill from the first week after I got him?

Yeah, these ones )

Today, five weeks later, he was sitting in the same spot. He's grown a bit )

And he's settled in well with the rest of the family )

In other news, I just called D in here to watch the latest trailer for this week's SGA episode (which is here, btw. Big spoilers for the ep, obviously.)

D: *starts shipping Sheppard and Woolsey*
Me: *head in hands and wondering where I went wrong, while waiting impatiently for Saturday*
D: *evil grin*

Bits [Aug. 12th, 2008|12:29 am]
The last week has been very up and down. Things are now starting to be more up again and I actually managed to get out for lunch yesterday, so... *waves dismissive hand at the rest of the week and seeks contact with the outside world again*

It's been really cold lately. Not quite snowing, but we've had sleet here, and there's been snow higher up. I come from a place where it never sleets or snows and I'm never going to quite get used to the fact that it gets this cold up here. The powdering of snow up the hill yesteday was pretty but it's really getting to that point where winter seems to be going on forever. *shivers and breaks latest sheet of ice covering the goldfish pond*

I'm still trying to get some sense out of ebay and Paypal. It's been two weeks now, and I'm not hopeful. Paypal acknowledges the problem and is washing its hands of it and referring me to ebay, while ebay... well, there isn't anything I can say about ebay's "help" service and keep my language worksafe, so we'll leave it at that.

I've been watching the Olympics. So has has the kitten:

[Current Mood | groggy]

The headache continues )

Meanwhile, the kitten is growing like crazy. D thinks Sasha's increased a third in size in the nine days since we got him. I have a feeling he may grown up to be a huge orange cat. He's settling in really well:

The last few days [Jul. 18th, 2008|12:19 am]
[Current Mood | blurred]

Kitten: continues to be incredibly cute and adorable, even when using human legs as ladders. (Ouch!)

Indy: is totally fascinated with his living toy, and no longer remotely bored.

[info]undunoops: came to visit me yesterday and brought decadent (according to D) chocolate biscuits. (Double yay.)

I: have been trying to decide all day whether I have a migraine or not. Finally decided late this afternoon that the inability to read - or do - pretty much anything at all was probably a clue, so took panadeine forte.

flist: is still a blur. I have no idea what you people are up to. Be good (or at least don't get caught.)

*crawls back under rock with more panadeine forte*

*is snuggled by sleepy kitten and instantly feels slightly more human*

Kitty update [Jul. 15th, 2008|09:27 pm]

The new kitten is settling in really easily and is turning out to be a fabulous kitten. He's so pretty, and he has a confident, laidback and affectionate personality to match. He's going to grow up to be a great cat. The first 24 hours were a bit traumatic for a few of us (ie. mainly Indy), who couldn't believe that a strange tiny cat was suddenly living in his house. The other cats had been through this before, of course, so they resigned themselves to it pretty quickly. After the first day, Indy's growls and hisses stopped, and the chasing turned into an actual game at some point yesterday morning. By last night, they were like this:

the boyz )

I think it's safe to say that this kitten was the right choice to be a companion for Indy. *g*

We've finally decided on a name. After going through a long list including Balthasar, Tango, ZPM, PJ, Cinnabar, Fred, Apricot, Adorable, Oxford, Kristo and, of course, John, we almost ended up calling him Saffron. I liked it better than any of the other suggestions, even though I just knew he'd end up being called Saffy, which was a bit girly even if I do agree that he's absolutely fabulous. But then I accidentally referred to him as Indy, and when I was correcting myself I called him Sasha instead of Saffron - and D and I looked at each other and said: "Let's call him Sasha!"

So, this is Sasha*:

Baby pics )

*I wasn't sure which way to spell it, but Nym tells me that Sasha is the Russian spelling, and is short for Alexander - and so we have Sasha aka Alexander the Tiny. ;-)

Fic rec [Jul. 10th, 2008|12:59 pm]

Rec: Truth and Measure
by [info]somniesperus (Telanu)
Fandom: The Devil Wears Prada
Pairing: Miranda/Andy (femslash)
Rating: NC-17

If you've ever been remotely interested in the characters from 'the Devil Wears Prada', this is the story that you have to read. Set immediately after the end of the film, it's AU in the sense that Andy made a different decision at the end of the film, and follows all the fall-out that results from this decision and one other specific factor over the course of the following year.

Of course it's incredibly well-written, and the characterisations are dead-on, not just for Miranda and Andy but for other characters, particularly Nigel. This is an immense and amazing story. I've watched it develop and grow while it was being written:

Telanu: "Oh, god! I think this is going to be long. Like, really, really long! Even by my standards!"
Telanu, a month later: "Oh, god. I think it's going to be longer than 'A Wizard Song'!"
Telanu, a month or so after that: "Oh, god! It's going to be more than 225,000 words!"

You get the idea. *g* So, if you want to read a fantastic 270,000 word Devil Wears Prada story that is also the longest thing that [info]somniesperus has ever written, read this now!

Movie meme [Jul. 6th, 2008|11:03 am]

I don't have the necessary energy to post about Doctor Who yet, so have this instead. Gacked from [info]gaycrow:

This is Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 movies of the last 25 years list.

Bold the ones you have seen
Put an asterisk after the movie title* if you really liked it.
Cross it out if you saw a film and really disliked it
Underline the ones you own

The list )

Wow, I'd forgotten quite how many movies I used to go to see. I just wish Dances With Wolves was in the list so I could strike it through, too.

Treasury boss Ken Henry opts for wombats over work

THE man at the helm of Australia's troubled economy will leave his post for nearly five weeks to look after a colony of endangered wombats.

Treasury Secretary Ken Henry will miss a key Reserve Bank Board meeting and have no mobile phone as he ventures into central Queensland...

Hey, wombats need care, too! I'm sure the economy will survive without him for a few weeks. It's not like he's the *only* economist working for Treasury.

In tea news, I've just finished trying my first pot of White Assam. Let's just say it's not going to be the last. It's not as delicate as other white teas I've tried, but still not too strong, and it seems to have the usual headache-fighting effects, too. I think I'll be drinking a lot of this in future. *adds to list of favourite teas*

Now to test drive the white darjeeling that also arrived today...

This is getting ridiculous [Jun. 24th, 2008|08:14 pm]
Jesus. D just went to fill up our car, which was almost on empty, because tonight is cheap petrol night. Filling the tank cost $85*, including a $2 coupon discount. That's at $1.54 per litre. By tomorrow afternoon the price will have risen to about $1.67 per litre. I remember what a shock it was when petrol finally reach a dollar per litre. It really wasn't all that long ago.

Just as well we don't drive very far very often and it's easier for D to take the train to work - 67km each way - than to drive. Pity the people who have to drive to work each day.

*US$81 at the current exchange rate.

When in doubt, quote [Jun. 24th, 2008|02:51 am]
[Current Mood | slightly less blah than the past three days]

Gacked most recently from [info]cereta: When you see the meme, quote something from Doctor Who:

"Deactivating a generator loop without the correct key is like repairing a watch with a hammer and chisel: one false move and you'll never know the time again."

Wordle [Jun. 20th, 2008|01:32 am]
[Current Mood | procrastinatory]

Gacked from [info]somniesperus:

I made a Wordle from the opening paragraphs of a few of my more recent bits and pieces of fic. The largest words are the most repeated. Yeah, huge surprise there...

New toy! [Jun. 3rd, 2008|07:27 pm]
[Current Mood | cheerful]

Pretty new red laptop arrived! It's all shiny and zippy and, most importantly, doesn't have 35 multi-coloured vertical lines running down the screen.

*goes back to installing software and stroking keyboard*

4gb ram
320gb hard drive
2.5ghz processor

And did I mention red?
